Moving to a new city can be an exciting adventure. Whether you’re moving to be closer to friends and family or getting transferred for a new job, the sooner you start researching your new location the better. Finding the perfect place to rent is hard when you can’t go check out a place in person, but there are ways to avoid choosing an unsafe neighborhood. Taking a little time upfront can mean being happy for the length of your lease.
Narrow It Down
To get started, cut out a lot of the work by narrowing down what you’re looking for. Do you want to be within 20 minutes of work? Do you want to be near a major highway? Do you want to live outside of town in a quiet suburb? Do you want to rent a house or an apartment? Decide what’s important to you and narrow down the areas you’re looking at on a map. The more you narrow it down in the beginning the easier and faster it will be to find the right neighborhood.
Use the Internet
There are numerous sites online that can offer a wealth of information when it comes to understanding specific neighborhoods. Look into CrimeReports which is a website that lists recent crimes by type and location. While crime can be anywhere, trends often show up and are a clue as to what you’ll be dealing with if you move into that area. The National Sex Offender Public Website by the U.S. Department of Justice can also give good information on how many sex offenders live in a certain area. Be wary of high concentrations of sex offenders in one location as this can mean a nearby apartment complex is open to renting to felons.
Once you begin to narrow down where you’re interested in looking, reach out on all of your social media platforms to see if anyone knows someone living in the area. Getting information on a specific area from a person who lives there can be invaluable. We all know how social media works; one of your friends or family members will most likely know someone, or a friend of a friend, who is connected to the area you’re considering.
Consider Using a Property Management Company
If you’re running out of time or still don’t feel comfortable after doing some research, consider renting through a property management company. Their employees know different areas throughout the city and are very familiar with the feel of different neighborhoods. They can narrow down the search for your new home based on specific criteria you give them, which can result in the perfect rental for you.
